Scenic Gerrish Island, accessible by bridge from Kittery Point, was taken for a fortification by the federal government in 1872. Today the ruins of the fort, closed after World War 2, has been adapted into a unique and lesser known town park. Littered with abandoned fortifications, the park revolves around a marshy area with expansive views, picnic areas, areas for surfing, wind surfing scuba diving and a rocky beach. Posted park rules require owners to curb and clean up after all dogs. Dogs must be leashed. No alcoholic beverages are allowed and the speed limit at the park is 5 mph. See the highly detailed link below on the history of the fort. Great views of Whaleback Light and Wood Island Lifesaving Station (see separate listings).
