William Whipple, Portsmouth, NH signer of the Declaration of Independence is buried here, as is his enslaved servant Prince Whipple who also served in the Revolution. Entombed also is Capt. Thomas Thompson of the first contiental ship Raleigh and John Langdon who was NH's first governor, signed the Constitution and built two ships for John Paul Jones. The Town of Portsmouth purchased the land in 1753 for 150 pounds from Col. John Hart, commander of the NH Regiment at Louisburg.
