Goat Island Lighthouse

Goat Island Lighthouse, seen in close-up here, is best seen by boat, perhaps a kayak rental. It can be viewed in the distance from Cape Porpoise Harbor. The lighthouse and island are not open to the public, except by permission of the Kennebunkport Conservation Trust that protects over 50 sites in the region. Established in 1834, the current tower is just 25 feet tall and was built in 1880. It was automated in 1990 and adopted from the US Government by the Trust in 1998. Covering just over seven acres, Goat Island also contains the 19th century lighthouse keeper’s house and a turn of the 20th century boat and oil house. The old lighthouse bell is currently at the Town House School building, part of the Kennebunkport Historical Society.
