Memorial Bridge

This rare endangered lift bridge is also a memorial to Piscataqua region of World War 1. It spans the river that connects Portsmouth, NH and Kittery, Maine. The bridge was dedicated in 1923 by a five year old Eileen Dondero, who grew up to become mayor of Portsmouth. Building the bridge over one of the world’s fastest flowing navigable rivers was an engineering feat. The footings of the bridge are sunk as much as 82 feet into bedrock below the river. Six thousand tons of sand and 14,000 barrels of cement were used to pin the steel footings in place. The three spans are 300 feet each. The entire road lifts into the air as ships pass below and was run by human operators until 2001 when it was automated. It’s difficult to take a bad picture of this ornate old bridge, especially during one of the region’s frequent pink and purple sunsets. Pedestrians can walk between states and get a close look at the dark swirling Piscataqua River below.
