Kittery Historical and Naval Museum

Home of America's oldest federal shipyard, Kittery now has its own public museum. From Kittery John Paul Jones launched his famous ship Ranger and the America, the nation's first ship of the line (see picture). The federal government purchased Dennett's island to built a national yard in 1800 and from it has come scores of famous tall ships, diesel ships, submarines including Squalus, Albacore, Kearsage and more. Kittery is also the home of poet Celia Thazter and William Dean Howells, artist Ruseel Cheney and more. Museum displays include the Boon Island lighthouse lens, shipbuilding displays, Bellamy carvings, archeological finds, ancient tools, ship modesls, a video presentation, paintings and photos.
