Walbach Tower

The crumbling remains of Walbach Tower are still visible near Fort Constitution. It was a very popular site for tourists in the Victorian era, more a romantic reminder of the early American nation than an actual historic site. The squat brick structure looks not unlike a large round cake. Built it 1814, reportedly in a single day during the British blockade of Portsmouth Harbor. It was named for Colonel John de Barth Walbach, originally from Germany, who served in the French Imperial Army until joining the American Army in 1799. The Tower appears in many early postcards and guidebooks and was the focus of patriotic odes, orations and summer picnic toasts.
