Wood Island Lifesaving Station
Kittery, ME

Save Wood Island! Local preservationists are working to save this superb example of a 1908 lifesaving station in Maine. By 1914 twelve stations were active in the state to protect dangerous spots along Maine’s jagged coast. Surfmen launched boats into the ocean at the first sign of danger, like ocean-going firemen. Today a dedicated volunteer group seeks to find new uses for the now unused station.
