Reopening in summer 2003, the Wentworth Hotel was originally built in 1874 as became one of the most famous luxury hotels on the Easter seaboard. A portion of the original structure survives in the newly constructed grand hotel, since of the famous Treaty of Portsmouth delegation in 1905. The largest building complex in the smallest town in New Hampshire (New Castle is one square mile) the Wentworth was one owed by ale tycoon Frank Jones. It closed in 1982 and became one of the nation’s must endangered historic sites. A nonprofit agency, Friends of the Wentworth, searched for an owner who would save and operate the hotel. Ocean Properties of Portsmouth has completely re-engineered the hotel and inherited the legacy of its 130 year history.
