South Cemetery
Portsmouth, NH

Photo courtesy of J. Dennis Robinson.

Technically there is no South Cemetery. It is the name given to the huge collection of five Portsmouth cemeteries, public and privately owned, so large that thre is a pond in the center. But the South Street Cemetery includes what has been called -- Auburn Cemetery, Cotton’s Cemetery, Harmony Grove Cemetery, Proprietors’ Burying Ground and Sagamore Cemetery. Well maintained (unlike North Cemetery). Today it is even popular among joggers. Records are available at the Portsmouth Public Library. Ale tycoon Frank Jones and two Smuttynose murder victims are among the current residents here (see separate listings)
