Frank Jones

Even in death, he stands taller than his fellow citizens. Know as the "ale tycoon" Frank Jones (1832-1902) was Portsmouth's richest citizen. He owned the railroad, insurance companies, banks, racing horses and the two key hotels in town -- the Rokcingham and Wentworth-by-the-Sea. A one-term Portmsouth mayor, Jones failed in a bid for governor, despite his ability to buy votes. Today he is thought of as a local "robber baron", but his influence remains in many buildings including his home on woodbury Ave and the buildings of the old brewery that made Frank Jones Ale. His tomb is the tallest in town.
