For a signer of the Declaration of Independence, William Whipple (1730- 1785) gets little respect in death. His sarcophagus in the North Cemetery is often the site of midnight beer parties. A sea captain and merchant, Whipple was economically attracted the idea of an independent America. He served in the provisional and continental congresses. A reluctant warrior, he led the local militia and served in the new state legislature and as a judge and tax collector. He is known for his honesty and consistent hard work in the early years of the new nation. He is most associated with the Moffatt-Ladd House (see separate listing) in Portsmouth, run by the Colonial Dames. The top of his tomb was replaced during the US bicentennial.
