The real vicitms of the 1873 murders on Smuttynose island rest in Portsmouth. The story of the moonlight March attack by Louis Wagner is a well known local tale. The murder house on Smuttynose Island no longer stands, but the story has been revived in the novel "Weight of Water" by Anita Shreve and a new film of the same name.
