If you are interested in Rochester's history and heritage, this is the place for you. Rochester, not Portsmouth or Dover, is the largest city in the Seacoast, NH region based on population. The historical society is available free to visitors, historians, and those tracing their family history. Membership is available too. Named for the Earl of Rochester, brother to King James II, the Lilac City charter was issued in 1722 and settled in 1728.
